Dean of Students

Leadership Public Schools is seeking applicants for the Dean of Students at their Richmond campus.

Leadership Public Schools' mission is to prepare students to succeed in college and become leaders in their communities. LPS is a network of three urban charter high schools dedicated to providing exemplary education in underserved communities in the Bay Area and developing replicable practices that can address critical issues in the wider education field.  LPS has developed a national reputation for accelerating the achievement of students entering high school below grade level and for creatively leveraging technology to empower teachers and students. LPS focuses on leveraging student assets to transition them to college and provide pathways to careers and community leadership.  The Dean of Students is a full-time, exempt, year-round employee reporting to the Principal.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Oversee Student Discipline Program
  • Foster a caring school environment
  • Review and implement discipline policies
  • Make recommendations for specific student disciplinary consequences
  • Monitor system for recording student disciplinary behavior and actions
  • Work with teachers on effective approaches to classroom management
  • Monitor student attendance and recommend appropriate responses

Oversee campus supervision, including schedule and staff

  • Oversee school safety, such as lockdowns, fire, and earthquake drills
  • Oversee campus supervisor
  • Coordinate Student Activities
  • Lead the planning and implementation for the student leadership retreat, including Freshmen Orientations during the summer

Coordinate and monitor student activities:

  • Oversee Honor Council
  • Build community support for student activities
  • Forge connections with the broader community
  • Build partnerships with regional community organizations
  • Develop and sustain relationships with future, current, and alumni parents
  • Serve as a liaison to the Parent Guardian Association
  • Foster Strong School Culture
  • Intentionally building school community, sense of community, sense of belonging, sense of purpose, sense of urgency
  • Establishing practices that proactively minimize class/school disruption
  • Establishing practices that actively build a sense of belonging
  • Using data to target school culture areas of need
  • Overseeing the grade level leads on classroom norming practices
  • Developing and leading the school culture team
  • Oversee certain event planning, such as Freshmen BBQ, Graduation, Awards Ceremony, Thanksgiving Brunch


  • Participate as a key member of the administrative team
  • Develop teachers’ classroom management skills
  • Sustain a culture of college success
  • Model the Leadership Way
  • Fulfill other assignments as best needed to serve our students

Essential Qualifications:

  • Experience with diverse youth in an urban school district
  • Spanish bi-lingual is a plus
  • High school teaching experience
  • School leadership experience
  • Successful experience managing classroom behavior and student discipline
  • Commitment to both excellence and equity
  • Team player
  • Academic expertise: a B.A. or M.A.
  • Experience in teaching with varied instructional strategies
  • Experience with collaborative work
  • Excellent communicator
  • Strong commitment to the Leadership mission and values
  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt easily
  • Comfortable with charter environment including fast growth and flexible roles
